Application support & further development of the e-commerce platform of UDO BÄR GmbH

UDO BÄR GmbH operates an international online shop across five countries, as well as cross-country OCI shops for its B2B customers, using Intershop as its commerce platform and Storyblok as its headless CMS. The platform was originally built by synaigy around eight years ago, and synaigy was also responsible for ongoing support after go-live. Later, another service provider took over support and maintenance of the system.

“synaigy knows our systems and processes better than any other partner. The combination of Intershop and Storyblok expertise, short communication paths, and a well-coordinated team convinced us to resume the partnership, and the restart has confirmed our expectations.”
Alex BlömekeHead of E-Commerce, UDO BÄR GmbH

Initial situation

International e-commerce platform based on Intershop and Storyblok

The positive experience from the previous partnership with synaigy led UDO BÄR to consider working together again. At the same time, requirements in international B2B commerce continued to increase. Topics such as personalization, guided selling, and search optimization with FactFinder were on the agenda but had not progressed. As a result, UDO BÄR decided to launch a new tender for application support.

Complex System Landscape: Requirements for the New Support Partner

  • Complex system landscape with integrations to Microsoft ERP, PIM, and additional third-party systems

  • Five country shops operating on a shared architecture, meaning that every change has international impact

  • Transition of the system from another service provider without disrupting ongoing operations

  • A growing backlog of optimization and further development initiatives

Why synaigy: Intershop and Storyblok expertise firsthand

As part of the tender process, synaigy stood out through its rare combination of deep product expertise, system knowledge, and firsthand understanding of the business. As a long-standing Intershop Platinum Partner and Storyblok Platinum Partner, with a Storyblok MVP on the team, synaigy brings exactly the technological profile required for the platform. This is complemented by wholesale industry expertise gained through comparable projects (Gustav Ehlert GmbH & Co. KG, Intergastro Handels GmbH & Co. KG, ZEG Zentraleinkauf Holz + Kunststoff eG, Soennecken eG, among others) and familiarity with UDO BÄR’s systems and processes from the previous partnership.

Several providers were evaluated as part of the tender process. Ultimately, the deciding factors were synaigy’s proven Intershop and Storyblok expertise, its structured onboarding approach, and the trust built during the original implementation project.

The solution: application support and further development from a single source

The renewed engagement began with a structured onboarding phase of approximately two weeks, including a kick-off workshop to align objectives, jointly prioritize the backlog, audit the existing system landscape, set up the development environment, and define deployment and ticketing processes. Since then, a dedicated interdisciplinary synaigy team has been responsible for the platform. The team combines Intershop and frontend development, UI/UX, and Data & Analytics expertise, while a dedicated Project Coordinator serves as the central point of contact.

The collaboration itself is agile and transparent. Task management takes place in Jira, documentation in Confluence, supported by weekly coordination meetings, a shared Teams channel, and a steering meeting every six weeks to evaluate progress and service quality.

Results: stable operations and a clear roadmap for the e-commerce platform

Although the renewed partnership is still in its early stages, the value of the provider transition is already evident, both in daily operations and in the platform’s future development outlook.

  • Once again, UDO BÄR has a partner that knows the platform from the ground up. Instead of lengthy onboarding, synaigy delivers fast, reliable assessments, short communication paths, and direct collaboration from day one.

  • Predictable capacity planning and a dedicated Project Coordinator as the central point of contact transform reactive ticket processing into proactive, jointly prioritized platform development.

  • Detailed planning of the roadmap provided by UDO BÄR for future initiatives such as personalization, guided selling, and search optimization with FactFinder ensures that the platform remains technologically up to date and scalable across international markets.

Key learnings: what retailers can learn from a provider transition

The most important insight from this project is that system knowledge and collaborative partnerships create long-term value. While changing service providers may appear attractive on paper, continuity, established processes, and genuine platform expertise are what determine stability and development speed in day-to-day e-commerce operations. When that knowledge is lost, it not only consumes time and budget but also slows down the very initiatives that create competitive advantage.

For UDO BÄR, synaigy’s return therefore means more than seamless support. The e-commerce platform is once again being developed by the team that understands its architecture from the ground up and knows the requirements of international B2B wholesale. This foundation makes it possible not only to plan future initiatives such as personalization and guided selling but also to implement them consistently across all five country shops.

In the end, both sides have learned that trust built over many years cannot be put out to tender. Yet it can win one.
