Seizing opportunities: click & collect at the railway station for e-commerce

With its Smart City | DB brand, DB InfraGO AG pursues a clear vision: with Box – the pickup station, the railway station becomes a central pickup point for online retail. Receiving and sending goods becomes as convenient as possible. Whether online orders, purchases from bricks-and-mortar retail or everyday services such as handing over textiles for cleaning – the pickup stations at railway stations offer a flexible, contactless and provider-independent solution. Thanks to their central location and simple use via QR code, with no registration required, parcels can be collected or returned around the clock.

Application Development

The advantages are obvious

Our task was to develop a Shopware app that seamlessly integrates Box – The Pickup Station into the Shopware system. We focused on ensuring the highest security and infrastructure standards. At the same time, we made sure that the solution remains future-proof and can be flexibly expanded.

Centrally located sites at high-traffic train stations

Flexible pickup times, regardless of delivery times

Versatile use for packages and more

Contactless and easy to use via QR code

With the new Shopware app, we have built a bridge to Shopware, one of the leading e-commerce systems, together with synaigy on the basis of the Box Merchant API. Our partners can now offer their customers our flexible and sustainable click & collect service “Box - Die Abholstation” as a shipping option in their Shopware shops with minimal effort. This further development is an important step towards making better use of railway stations as central locations in the context of last-mile logistics as well.

From concept to implementation: A collaborative development process

The collaboration with synaigy began when Smart City | DB was looking for an experienced partner that combined expertise in both e-commerce and logistics. With our experience in developing Shopware apps and a hands-on approach, we were able to quickly implement a high-performance solution.

Among the key highlights of the implementation are:

Seamless integration of pickup stations into the Shopware infrastructure using the Box Merchant API.

Development of a location finder that shows customers the nearest or most accessible pickup location.

Automatic calculation of the required bin size for each shipment.

A flexible app architecture that enables future enhancements, such as returns management or integration with other store systems.

An app that sets new standards

The Shopware app we developed is more than just a technical solution—it enables retailers to offer their customers a modern and sustainable shipping option directly at checkout, available in the Shopware Plugin Store.

  • Flexible, transaction-based pricing model

  • Automatic container size calculation and reservation

DB InfraGO AG’s security requirements were fully met, and the app can be easily operated within the existing cloud infrastructure.

The result: Added value for everyone involved

With the new app, Smart City | DB has taken another step toward sustainable, efficient logistics. Customers benefit from a convenient, flexible pickup option, while retailers can offer an additional shipping option—independent of fixed delivery times or specific package delivery services.

Our strong partnership demonstrates how innovative ideas become reality with the right technology. The app is not only a milestone for Smart City | DB, but also serves as a benchmark for other companies looking to rethink and digitize their business models.

Of particular note is the added value the app provides:

End customers

A simple, innovative way to pick up orders with flexibility.
