OVHcloud: robust infrastructure for German mid-market companies – perfect combination of network and global latency strategy.
The IT landscape is constantly changing, and Germany's Mittelstand faces the challenge of remaining competitive not just locally but internationally too. In an age where data is the backbone of every business activity, a reliable IT infrastructure is of critical importance. With its global mesh network and a weather map visualising connections between data centres, OVHcloud provides an ideal foundation for tackling challenges such as data availability, disaster recovery (DR) and expansion into international markets.

OVHcloud's mesh network – global redundancy for maximum reliability
Heart of OVHcloud infrastructure is the mesh network, a global fibre-optic network with multiple redundant backbone links between data centres. Each data centre connects to several other sites, ensuring not just fast data transfer but also failover resilience. The OVHcloud Weathermap (weathermap.ovh.net) shows in real time how efficiently these links perform. It shows that OVHcloud runs not just data centres, but a state-of-the-art network that helps companies build robust, flexible IT infrastructure.

Why is the mesh network ideal for German SMEs?
Even if a connection fails, traffic is automatically rerouted so data availability remains guaranteed.
Thanks to strategic connections, replications between locations such as Frankfurt, Roubaix and Strasbourg are possible almost in real time.
Companies can easily integrate locations in Europe, Asia or North America to serve new markets.
Test methodology
The basis of this blog post is a comprehensive analysis of the latencies between the data centres in the OVHcloud network. To obtain reliable and precise values, the data was measured using the widely used and proven tool SmokePing. SmokePing is an open-source tool developed for measuring and monitoring network latencies. It provides detailed insights into the delays between network points by continuously sending ping requests to target addresses, monitoring latency, packet loss and fluctuations (jitter). For the measurement, a measurement interval of every 60 seconds was configured over a period of 19 days, during which around 27,000 samples per measurement point were taken to assess fluctuations.

Possible location combinations with Germany: a latency analysis
Frankfurt (DE1) is one of the central hubs in the OVHcloud network in Germany and serves many German companies as the primary location for their IT infrastructure. Thanks to its excellent connectivity to other data centres within the OVHcloud mesh network, Frankfurt offers an ideal base for latency-critical applications, data replication and disaster recovery strategies. Below, we analyse the latencies between Frankfurt and other relevant OVHcloud locations, from extremely low latencies for standby environments to robust disaster recovery solutions and efficient backup and edge caching strategies.
Standby environment (latency under 10 ms)
These locations are excellently suited for latency-critical applications requiring fast replication and near-instant availability. They're ideal for active standby solutions.
Location | Latency (ms) |
|---|---|
Strasbourg (SBG5) | 4,352 |
Zurich (EU-WEST-LZ-ZRH-A) | 7,002 |
Roubaix (RBX-A) | 9,038 |
Amsterdam (EU-WEST-LZ-A-A) | 9,852 |
Gravelines (GRA11) | 9,901 |
Milan (EU-SOUTH-LZ-MIL-A) | 10,000 |
Disaster recovery (DR) (latency 10–90 ms)
Locations in this category offer sufficiently low latencies to enable efficient disaster recovery solutions. Data can be replicated regularly and restored quickly when needed.
Location | Latency (ms) |
|---|---|
Prague (EU-CENTRAL-LZ-PRG-A) | 10,414 |
Vienna (EU-WEST-LZ-VIE-A) | 12,624 |
London (UK1) | 12,945 |
Warsaw (WAW1) | 19,206 |
Marseille (EU-WEST-LZ-MRS-A) | 24,674 |
Madrid (EU-SOUTH-LZ-MAD-A) | 25,448 |
Rabat (AF-NORTH-LZ-RBA-A) | 48,899 |
Backup and edge caching (latency > 90 ms)
Due to higher latencies, these locations are less suited to real-time applications. However, they are ideal for long-term backups, archiving and edge caching, particularly in far-distant regions.
Location | Latency (ms) |
|---|---|
Singapore (SGP1) | 160,876 |
Mumbai (AP-SOUTH-MUM-1) | 224,101 |
Sydney (SYD1) | 244,653 |
Application examples: how SMEs benefit from the OVHcloud network
German SMEs often face a double challenge: on one hand they need to make their IT infrastructure efficient and cost-effective, on the other hand increasing digitalisation demands a global presence and maximum reliability. OVHcloud's mesh network is designed to meet exactly these requirements. It enables companies to distribute their data flexibly and securely between locations, position their workloads optimally and be prepared for the unforeseen.
Whether for disaster recovery, opening new markets, or hybrid infrastructures – possibilities are many. Below we show how typical scenarios for German SME companies can be realised with OVHcloud infrastructure.
1. Disaster recovery and data availability
For a mid-sized company operating in, say, the manufacturing industry, a reliable IT infrastructure is critical. Production data, customer data and planning information must be available at all times, even in the event of an IT outage. With OVHcloud, companies can build an effective DR strategy:
Frankfurt (DE1) as main location for all production systems.
Strasbourg (SGB) as secondary location. The low latency of just 4 ms between these two data centres enables near-instant data replication.
Beauharnois (BHS5) in Canada as a location for DR data. With a latency of 86 ms, daily backups can be run without affecting production systems.
This setup ensures that data remains secure and available even during a regional outage (e.g. Natural disasters or power failures).
2. Expansion into international markets
A mid-sized e-commerce company based in Germany looking to expand into the Asian market can use the OVHcloud mesh network to optimise regional performance.
Singapore (SGP1) serves as a hub for Asian markets. With a latency of 161 ms from Frankfurt to Singapore, caching systems can be set up to store customer data locally and reduce loading times for Asian users.
The main database remains in Frankfurt (DE1), while replicated databases are kept in Singapore to enable faster data processing in the region.
With rising demand, an additional location in Mumbai (MUM-1) could be set up to improve data availability in India and Southeast Asia.
3. Hybrid solutions for secure data processing
Many mid-sized companies work with sensitive data processed both in the cloud and locally. OVHcloud enables seamless integration of on-premises systems and the cloud:
Primary data processing remains local in Germany, while backups and non-latency-critical applications (e.g. Archiving) are stored in Beauharnois or Singapore.
OVHcloud meets European data protection standards, which ensures that companies comply with GDPR requirements even when using global data centres.
Why the OVHcloud mesh network offers the perfect basis
The strength of the OVHcloud network lies in its ability to optimise the connection between different locations. This means:
Data always takes the fastest path. For example, latency between Frankfurt and London (UK1) is just 13 ms, which is excellent for real-time applications.
Companies can add or change locations without this affecting network performance.
Thanks to redundant connections there are no single points of failure, guaranteeing high availability.
Conclusion: OVHcloud – a reliable partner for German SMEs
OVHcloud's global mesh network and the Weathermap offer German SMEs a perfect foundation for making their IT infrastructure future-proof. Whether it's about replicating data securely, implementing disaster recovery strategies, or serving international markets. OVHcloud provides the performance and flexibility that companies need.
With locations such as Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Warsaw, Roubaix and Beauharnois, plus strategic connections to Asia, OVHcloud offers the infrastructure German mid-sized companies need to stay competitive. It's time to harness the benefits of a global network and turn IT into a strategic advantage.
