Fine-tuning the gears. Internally and externally.

When the coronavirus pandemic caused customer demand for bicycles and accessories to rise dramatically last year, because brick-and-mortar retailers were no longer available during the first lockdown, the IT infrastructure reached its limits. In this context, it was decided to analyse the IT systems and the business processes in order to identify potential for improvement.

In order to cope with the high customer rush on the web shop at short notice, additional server capacity was installed and the IT architecture was modernised. To be equipped for further growth in the long term as well, it was decided to analyse the entire internal process chain.

About Bike Components

Bike Components is an online retailer for bicycle components and accessories. Launched as a start-up in 1997, Bike Components currently employs 200 people, lists more than 60,000 items and carries more than 300 brands. These increasingly include own brands as well.

With two dedicated projects, Bike Components is developing further with our support.

The introduction of a product information management system (PIM) and the analysis of the business processes for the following areas are at the centre of this:

  • Purchasing

  • Logistics

  • Service

  • Marketing

  • Financials

  • Product Management

Improving product data quality and providing product information for the online channel efficiently and with tool support are the objectives for introducing a product information management system. In a series of workshops we gathered the requirements and, in the course of this, the tender for the introduction of the PIM was published.

Analysing internal business processes with “event storming”

When analysing the business processes, the focus was on the collaboration between the different areas. For this purpose, the workshop technique “event storming” was used, which comes from the domain-driven design approach. In this context, the following goals were defined:

  • Developing a shared language (“ubiquitous language”),

  • Identifying potential for improvement (“hot spots”),

  • Working out triggers for process steps (“domain events”),

  • Naming the actors involved,

  • Describing business rules (“business policies”)

  • Developing business objects (“entitites”).

The results were documented in process models, data models and catalogues of measures. In addition, quick wins were identified and prioritised, which are being implemented by Bike Components.

Let's talk about your project.

Every project you see here started with a simple conversation. Send us a quick note explaining what it's about. We'll figure out the rest together.
