CMS migration and multi-tenant relaunch for SachsenEnergie AG

SachsenEnergie is one of the major regional energy providers in Germany. With multiple brands, services, and digital touchpoints, the website landscape is a central element of customer communication.

To make this landscape fit for the future, SachsenEnergie is modernizing nine web presences based on Magnolia CMS PaaS. synaigy is supporting the migration from the existing CMS to a modern multi-tenant platform. The foundations are a clear component architecture, automated processes, and a stable technical base.

The aim was to manage content more efficiently, better integrate specialist applications, and consistently evolve digital communication across multiple brands.

synaigy fully understood our complex requirements right from the start. The combination of proven Magnolia expertise, an agile project approach, and a dedicated, reliable team convinced us. This trust was fully confirmed over the course of the project.

Initial situation

Why the old website landscape reached its limits

Over the years, an organically grown system landscape had emerged that increasingly made it difficult to meet key requirements for editorial work, scalability, and process automation.

Many editorial workflows and content items had to be coordinated with great effort, tenants could only be managed uniformly to a limited extent, and further developments were becoming increasingly complex from a technical perspective.

At the same time, requirements for performance, accessibility, operational security, and flexible digital services were increasing. For SachsenEnergie, this meant placing the website landscape on a new technical foundation.

Three tasks that shaped the relaunch

Managing nine tenants efficiently on one platform

SachsenEnergie wanted to bring nine web presences onto a shared CMS platform. Each presence was to retain its own identity while benefiting from a unified technical foundation.

Simplifying editorial work and processes

The existing editorial processes were heavily manual. Creation, approval, and deletion of content were to be more structured and efficient in the future.

Technical modernization during ongoing operations

The migration had to take place in parallel with ongoing operations. In addition to switching to Magnolia CMS PaaS, a CI/CD pipeline, deployment processes, and integrations for specialist applications were set up without interrupting existing digital services.

The path

Magnolia expertise and large-scale project experience tip the balance

SachsenEnergie chose synaigy in a structured tender process. Decisive factors were the proven Magnolia expertise, experience with complex platform projects, and a transparent agile approach.

synaigy contributed experience from comparable large-scale projects, including for the TRATON Group, Heraeus, and Nolte Küchen. As part of the TIMETOACT Group, it also brought the necessary scalability for a project of this magnitude.

Solution

Multi-tenant platform with components & apps

synaigy developed a cross-tenant platform architecture based on Magnolia CMS PaaS. Nine web presences were implemented on a shared technical foundation.

The core of the solution is reusable components and various apps. Through tenant-specific renderings, different requirements and corporate identity elements can be represented without duplicating the platform multiple times.

This creates a system that can be maintained centrally while still offering enough flexibility for independent brand and service presences.

Project approach

The project approach: three phases to the relaunch

The project was structured into three phases.

Setup

Building the technical foundation with CI/CD pipeline, tenant configuration, deployment environments, and app integration module.

Implementation

Development of components and apps in agile sprints with clear sprint goals, regular alignment, and continuous quality assurance.

Maintenance and further development

Stabilization, operation, and gradual optimization of the platform after the relaunch.

Technology

Technical foundation: Magnolia CMS PaaS and automated processes as the basis

For the relaunch, SachsenEnergie is relying on Magnolia CMS PaaS. The platform is supplemented by automated development, testing, and deployment processes.

In addition, central functions for operation and further development were set up.

  • Multi-tenant architecture for nine web presences

  • numerous reusable components

  • various apps for specific requirements

  • app integration module for specialist applications

  • automated content workflows

  • redirect management

  • WebP image optimization

  • automated tests

  • continuous code analysis

Result

The added value for SachsenEnergie

The relaunch is creating a modern platform that consolidates nine web presences on a shared technical foundation.

Editorial teams will be able to maintain content more efficiently, manage approvals in a more structured way, and evolve digital offerings more consistently. The reusable component architecture reduces operational effort and creates a resilient basis for future requirements.

For SachsenEnergie, this means less technical complexity, greater editorial controllability, and a platform that can grow with the demands of digital customer communication.

Conclusion

Nine presences, one common foundation

Multi-tenant projects require clear architectural decisions, a robust technical setup, and a team that assumes responsibility across project phases.

The relaunch for SachsenEnergie shows how established web presences can come together on a shared platform while strengthening brand identity, editorial flexibility, and technical future viability in equal measure.

In this way, nine individual web presences become a modern foundation for digital communication, service, and further development.
