Sustainability at interactive tools
4 min read

There are many ways and approaches to working more sustainably. We at interactive tools try out which options are workable for us and gain our own experience in our pursuit of environmental protection, economic sustainability and social justice.
We're far from done, but we keep trying to improve things together. Here we explain individual measures in our effort to work one hundred percent sustainably.

Our topics:
Saving paper, electricity from renewable sources, low-emission travel, good food, sustainable office supplies, waste separation & avoidance

We use digitalisation to conserve resources.
Wherever we can save paper and transport through digitalisation, we do so: invoices for our clients and payslips for our employees are organised digitally wherever possible. We increasingly use video conferencing to avoid frequent business trips. As digital experts, we make use of the opportunities offered by new technologies when they are more resource-efficient than analogue options.

In our insight "How sustainable communication works", we get to the point of what's behind ESG criteria, SDGs and GRI, and how companies can communicate their environmental and social engagement convincingly.

We deliberately consume energy from renewable sources.
Power is needed for every team member's devices. Our servers run 24 hours a day. interactive tools uses a lot of electricity. With that in mind, we source green electricity from Lichtblick, generated from 100% German hydropower. Besides eco-friendly generation, cutting consumption matters to us too. We use a smart heating system that minimises our heating needs. Every team member knows that each email, each Google search and each download consumes energy.

We travel with as low emissions as possible.
Preferred mode of transport: rail. We try not to book domestic flights within Germany. Should this not be possible for any reason, we offset the emissions of a flight per person with a flat-rate contribution of €10 to climate protection projects. More than 90% of colleagues travel to work by train, bicycle or on foot.

We source sustainable food.
The most important food source for people at digital agencies is probably coffee. Our coffee arrives in a metal deposit bucket straight from Berlin's Flying Roasters coffee roastery. It's direct and fair trade as well as organic-certified. We also look for organic certification with our tea. We source fruit for colleagues from Märkische Kiste – the provider of regional, seasonal organic produce in Berlin.

We use sustainable office materials.
We buy new office supplies made from recycled or sustainable raw materials. We also pay close attention to environmental compatibility with cleaning products and hygiene items.
We handle waste consciously.
We take waste separation very seriously. Our kitchens are equipped with separate bins for paper, packaging and residual waste. We also encourage our employees from day one to produce less waste: the office spaces only have paper bins – private packaging waste has to be taken back home. We use batteries that are rechargeable. We also try to recycle our electronic devices: reselling, giving away, donating to schools. We dispose of e-waste through a certified disposal company.
